At least some of the 54 employees of VPD Inc., a Perrysburg Township operation that distributes DVDs, video games, and other home entertainment products, are expected to get at least a four-month extension of their jobs beyond a planned Oct. 12 shutdown, company officials said Wednesday.
VPD, of suburban Sacramento, was sold earlier this month to a competitor, Ingram Entertainment Inc. of LaVergne, Tenn.
As a result, VPD filed a Worker Adjustment Retraining and Notification Act notice with the state of Ohio on Tuesday, indicating it planned to close the Perrysburg Township operation and terminate the jobs of its 54 workers no later than Oct. 12.
Rhonda Ashoff, VPD human resources director, said, “What was in the WARN notice is, in fact, true. We are laying off employees permanently and shutting down.”
However, Dave Sedin, VPD’s chief financial officer, said Ingram Entertainment “told us they intend to keep the [Perrysburg Township] facility going for at least another 120 days beyond” the Oct. 12 shutdown date.
But the new owners did not indicate exactly how many of the 54 workers it will need, the VPD official said.
“They have indicated they will need the majority of the folks [in Perrysburg Township] for that period,” Mr. Sedin said.
Mr. Sedin said Ingram does a significant amount of business with supermarkets, drugstores, and specialty retailers, and October through January is a crucial sales and distribution period for the firm.
After the 120 days, Ingram will reassess its acquisition of VPD and determine which facilities to keep or close.
VPD had operations in Folsom, Calif., Perrysburg Township, and Texas.
Ingram “has six distribution facilities, so I don’t know how much of VPD they’ll be able to absorb,” Mr. Sedin said. “But they will need our [Ohio] facility for another four months.
“So what will happen is they are going to come in the next day after we close and then they’ll all be Ingram employees for the next four months,” Mr. Sedin said.
