Pesto tasting featured at Perrysburg health fair

Walt Churchill’s Market in Perrysburg today will host a health fair featuring Bittersweet Farms.

The fair takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doreen “Dink” Russell, dietary manager, and Jamie Cummins, a culinary student, will offer information about Bittersweet Farms and autism, as well as demonstrate a recipe for pesto turkey burgers. Pesto and crackers will also be available for sampling.

Bittersweet Farms offers services for adolescents and adults with autism in Whitehouse, Pemberville, and Lima.

Its pesto project provides employment opportunities for some of these individuals. Bittersweet Farms Pesto is made from basil grown in two hoop houses at the Whitehouse location, which extend the local growing season by nearly four months. Bittersweet harvests fresh produce almost year-round, and invites members of the community to enroll in their Community Supported Agriculture program. This program provides enrollees with a weekly box of fresh produce for nine weeks.

Nine-week shares are available for purchase during three separate seasons: spring, summer, and fall.

Community members can enroll in one, two, or all three seasons. Informational postcards will be available at the Health Fair this weekend, and those interested are invited to sign-up at The CSA program provides vocational opportunities for adults with autism.

Bittersweet Day Program participants are involved in every aspect of the process; from seeding and harvesting to packaging and delivering the CSA boxes of produce.
