Matthew and Chiara Kerr, of Perrysburg, participated in a Cookie-a-thon Oct.19 for Children's International Summer Villages.

CISV Junior Branch baked cookies to raise money for the chapter’s Summer Village. During the village, 11-year-olds from 12 different countries will spend a month building global friendships and learning about peace. More than 60 dozen cookies were baked and donated to area shelters.

CISV International was conceived by Dr. Doris Allen in 1946 in an attempt to spur peace and wellness education among children. As a specialist in growth and development, Dr. Allen believed that “the ultimate source for peace, long range, lay with the children.”

In 1951, she realized her dream when delegates from eight countries gathered in Cincinnati for the first Children’s International Summer Village (CISV). Over the decades, the organization grew in numbers, countries and activities. In 1979, Doris Allen was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
