Way Public Library patrons can download music for free

Way Public Library in Perrysburg is now offering a new program that allows library card owners to download three songs a week online, for free and legally.

The program, called Freegal, combining the words free and legal, was launched last month and is slowly being introduced to patrons.

Library Director Janel Haas said the library saved thousands of dollars doing the service in collaboration with other libraries in Wood County.

If you have a library card you can go to https://waylibrary.freegalmusic.com/users/sdlogin, or click on the link from Waylibrary.info. Every week you can download three new songs to keep forever, every Sunday is when you can get more songs.

"We looked at adding it a year ago but it was still clunky and wasn't very user friendly," Mrs. Haas said. "We are always trying to stay on the cutting edge and this is where the music industry is going."

Mrs. Haas said it will cost the library about $7,000 yearly for the service based on circulation and not on downloads.

"We've had over 300 downloads and haven't heard of anyone having trouble," she said.
