Perrysburg Heights Community Association made about $2,000 from a community cook-out Friday that will help it stay afloat until it hopes that grant money comes in or additional funds are raised during its August festival.
"The $2,000 is great, every little bit counts," said Stephanie Serda, association executive director. "We are trying to keep this momentum going."
The center is reducing its hours to 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday as it tries to try to raise more money. The "summer schedule" began Monday. The staff will use the reduced hours to try to come up with fund-raisers and things to create revenue.
The association will hold a flea market at the center every Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside, or in the gymnasium if it rains. It costs vendors $5 to come to sale their items. The first flea market was Friday.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, the center hold a car wash to raise funds at Marco's Pizza in Perrysburg.
Ms. Serda said she will, at the next board meeting for the organization, to use emergency funds in the endowment to keep things going.
Summer programs were helped by a Helping Hens grant from the Toledo Community Foundation, giving the center just under $7,000 for sports camps through the summer and new sports equipment. The money also will go toward helping some students at the center go in to higher-level sports camps.
The camps are starting with soccer for a week, next week will be track and field, then basketball, wrestling, and volleyball. The Perrysburg Heights Community Association is still looking for volunteers to teach a week of baseball, football, cheerleading, and rugby. These camps are for an hour everyday at 1 p.m.
The center does focuses on arts at 2 p.m., before a hour of free time at the end of the day. The soccer camp started Monday, while the center mostly has Perrysburg Heights residents, other children in the Perrysburg community can attend by calling the center at 419-874-4529.
Ms. Serda is banking on raising money through grants the association THE ASSOCIATION? currently has applied for and the annual South of the Border event Aug. 9 and 10 at the center. AT THE CENTER?.
