Vaccine against the flu in limited supply in Perrysburg area

In the height of flu season, vaccines are in limited supply in the Perrysburg area.

The Kroger off of Fremont Pike is out of flu vaccines and won't be restocked until next flu season in September, said Kroger pharmacist Patrick Ansbell.

"We ran out before Christmas," he said.

The Walgreens, also off Fremont Pike, has fewer than 10 vaccines left. A pharmacist there expected more shots possibly as soon as today. The shots at Walgreens cost $39.99. He said the rush for shots fluctuates with when and how often it gets mentioned on television and in newspapers. Area health officials have reported hundreds of people ill from the flu and nine local people have died.

Rite Aid pharmacy in the Fort Meigs Shopping Center is stocked with flu shots, which cost $29.99 there. A pharmacist said the demand has been very strong to receive the shots.

A spokesman for Mercy Medical Center in Perrysburg said the emergency center has treated flu victims, but not an unusually high amount for this time of year. The center, however, does not provide flu shots.

Dr. Daniel Neumeyer, of Mercy Medical Center in Perrysburg, offered tips to avoid the flu -- wash your hands often, drink plenty of water, eat healthy and exercise, and avoiding crowded places. If you feel ill, he said, stay home.
