The number of car accidents at Roachton Road and State Rt. 199 in Perrysburg Township has been on the rise since authorities closed Scheider Road, just north of the intersection.

Township officials closed Scheider Road at the intersection with State Rt. 199 on Jan. 15 in the hopes that the move would help avert serious accidents at the intersection. During Wednesday’s township trustee meeting Police Chief Mark Hetrick said there have been five accidents at nearby Roachton Road and State Rt. 199 since the change.

He couldn’t recall the types of accidents, but said they were injury accidents. The closing of Scheider Road has forced more vehicles to go down to Roachton Road.

“The angle (of the intersection) makes it difficult to see,” Mr. Hetrick said.

Also on Jan. 15, trustees voted to prohibit left turns from Eckel Junction Road onto State Rt. 199. The police have stopped and warned 77 drivers who have still made the turn. Beginning in April, 90 days after the new rule’s approval, drivers making prohibited left turns there will get tickets instead of warnings, Mr. Hetrick said.

Townships trustees have said they plan to eventually build a roundabout at the Roachton Road and State Rt. 199 intersection.

In other business Tuesday, after 30 years of service Joe Schaller is retiring from the township maintenance department Feb. 27. The trustees said they appreciate  his hard work and accepted his resignation.

“Joe brings a lot to the table,” said Trustee Gary Britten. “I think he has another venture and I hope it works out for him.”
