Stolen tools from Perrysburg area sold on Craigslist

BLADE STAFF

Perrysburg Township police are cataloging more that $20,000 worth of recovered tools that were reported stolen from area businesses the past two months and hoping more will turn up, according to authorities.

Anyone who recently purchased Snap On, Mac, or Matco tools on the classified Web site Craigslist is being asked to call the police department at 419-874-3551 because they may be in possession of stolen property, said Detective James Gross.

About 100 items have been recovered so far, ranging from tools such as wrenches and sockets to electronic equipment such as fuel injector testers. Some markings were ground off the tools, although there still were ways to identify them, Detective Gross said.

"When you work with tools day in and day out, year in and year out, you get kind of intimate with them. ... You know your tools," Detective Gross said.

Break-ins were reported in the last two months at T. Gray Automotive, 26040 Glenwood Road; SeaGate Transportation, 555 F Street; and Ampoint Maintenance, 521 E Street.

A large container of tools was seized from a Toledo location Thursday after an advertisement for them on Craigslist.com led to a search warrant.

No arrests have been made. The investigation is not complete, the detective said.

Losses from the township businesses ranged from $30,000 to $75,000, he said.
