Jason Thomas’ 4th grade class at Frank Elementary received a $500 donation from the Coach retail company through www.adoptaclassroom.com.
The Adopt-a-Classroom program allows teachers to post project ideas and donors can select a project to fund.
Mr. Thomas used the $500 donation to purchase books and book baskets to upgrade the classroom library. As a class, they went through the library and came up with various genres and categories in which to sort the books. When the new books and book baskets arrived, the class finalized its genre/category list and spent a couple hours sorting books.
“Genre is a challenging topic for 4th graders to understand,” explained Mr. Thomas. “This activity helped my students immensely because they had to discuss in their groups the genre of every book in our classroom.”
The majority of the $500 was spent on books. As a class, they sat down and discussed the kinds of books and the topics that the classroom library was lacking. Non-fiction texts were the majority of what was purchased, as our new Common Core Standards place a big emphasis on these texts.
“The kids were beyond excited when the books arrived,” stated Mr. Thomas. “Their motivation to read has never been stronger, thanks in large part to our new books and our upgraded classroom library. We are so incredibly grateful to the Coach Company for their generous donation.”
