Davis named to fill vacant Perrysburg school board seat

The Perrysburg Board of Education interviewed applicants on Thursday and then unanimously appointed named William Jarman Davis III to fill a vacant board seat.

Mr. Davis will be sworn into office at Monday's 5:30 p.m. school board meeting

"The board had a very difficult task because we were fortunate to have a very strong and deep field from the community step forward," Superintendent Tom Hosler said. "He is a parent [of a Perrysburg students] and that is something the board didn't have. He also has a strong background in finance."

Mr. Davis replaces Barry VanHoozen, who resigned after he was elected to the Perrysburg City Council. Mr. VanHoozen had been served on the board since 2003, and his term ends in 2015.

Interviewing the candidates and voting were current board members Gretchen Downs, Walt Edinger, Cal Smith, and Sue Larimer. Mr. Smith and Ms. Larimer are new members, just sworn into office on Thursday.

Mr. Davis, 43, lives on Woodstream Road in Perrysburg. He is a financial advisor with Merrill Lynch of northwest Ohio and branch manager in Perrysburg. He grew up in Perrysburg, attending Frank Elementary, and has three children enrolled in the district. with another coming next year.

In his application, he said his business experience and financial background would help him on the board. He has master's degree in business from the University of Michigan.

Mr. Davis did not run in the November election.

Other applicants were Eric Benington, who is a vice president and assistant controller at Health Care REIT Inc. in Toledo; Jason Decker, who is director of accounting and reporting for Therma-Tru Corp in Maumee; Valerie Hovland, who is an attorney and was a school board member from 2006 through 2013 but lost in her re-election bid in November; and Ken Widdel, who is the senior vice president of Creative Financial Partners in Perrysburg.
