3 newest members sworn in during Perrysburg Board of Education meeting

The Perrysburg Board of Education today had three new members sworn in, and board member Gretchen Downs was re-elected as president.

William Jarman Davis III, Cal Smith, and Sue Larimer were all introduced for the first time, as Perrysburg Municipal Judge Molly Mack did the honors of swearing them in. Mr. Smith and Ms. Larimer were elected to their first terms on the board, while Mr. Davis was appointed to the board after Barry VanHoozen resigned to take a seat on city council.

Walt Edinger was elected as vice president of the board.

Monday's meeting was an organizational time for the board to set meeting times, be assigned to committees, make standing authorizations, and get ready for 2014. The first regular board meeting of the year will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 21.

Regular meetings will continue to be the third Mondays of the month at 5:30 p.m. January and February meetings will be on the third Tuesday of the months because of holidays, however.

The board also discussed holding a retreat whose timeframe will be decided on later. The board is looking at scheduling the retreat for either late February or early March. Board members typically go somewhere local on a Saturday night accompanied by a Ohio School Board Association facilitator, to bond, discuss roles of the board, and set goals for the year.

New board member Cal Smith asked that it be later February so the board could get its feet wet and have more of an effective discussion about the board instead of training for new members.

"It is worthwhile to be educated on the role of the board, obligations ... and have board interaction," Superintendent Tom Hosler said. "With three new team members it gives us the opportunity to get to know each other. It takes time to bond."

The board discussed going to the W.W. Knight Nature Preserve, 577 Foundation, or other local venues for the retreat. Mr. Hosler said the costs are reasonable, with a meal and the facilitator's time the only financial commitments.
