Perrysburg High School's football team will have to be without its star running back and linebacker Mark Delas for at least the next two to three weeks, according to his coach.

Coach Matt Kregel said Delas separated his shoulder in the Yellow Jackets 42-25 loss to Whitmer last week. At 7  tonight, Perrysburg hosts Clay High School in its second game of the season.

Delas ran for 803 yards and 18 touchdowns last year during his junior season, earning All-Northern Lakes League honors. His presence will be missed defensively, too.

"The biggest thing is we're losing a linebacker and three-year starter," Kregel said. "We're working on finding someone to step up but it is a work in progress. You don't just throw in another Mark Delas."

When Delas went down against Whitmer, it meant that junior quarterback Gus Dimmerling had to do it all offensively. The former running back had 24 carries for 128 yards and passed for 173 yards and two touchdowns. He had two interceptions.

Clay started the season with a 28-3 win last week over Northview.

"It really wasn't even that close," Kregel said of Clay's opener. "They are a physical and athletic team, a lot like us."

Kregel said that, for Perrysburg to earn its first win of the season, the Yellow Jackets will have to eliminate mistakes and make big plays on defense. Key mistakes cost his team against Whitmer, Kregel said, including a special teams blunder and interception taken back for a touchdown.

"We have to make Clay earn their points and sustain drives by not allowing big plays -- and getting stops," he said. "On offense, we have to possess the ball and have good, long drives."

Perrysburg will have the challenge of that without its big, senior running back Delas.

"It is one of those things you don't want to happen to your best player," Kregel said.
