Avon wins playoff match 24-21 over Perrysburg


HURON, Ohio -- A fourth quarter comeback fell short for Perrysburg as Avon won 24-21 at Huron High School today in the Division II second-round playoff matchup.

It was the second consecutive year Avon bounced Perrysburg from the playoffs.

Down 10 points Nick Fleming caught his third interception of the night for Perrysburg and took it 49-yards for a TD on the first play of the fourth quarter. That made the score 17-14 Avon.

Perrysburg went 91-yards on its next possession that ended on a Trevor Hafner 7-yard TD pass to Nate Patterson giving the Yellow Jackets their first lead of the night 21-17 with 7:53 left.

Avon answered with its second touchdown pass of the night minutes later and held on to the 24-21 lead.

Hafner, making his first varsity start, had an impressive night. He completed 22 of 41 passes for 317 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 73 yards on 16 carries.

Miscues hurt Perrysburg with three turnovers and two blocked field goals ending long drives.
