In an effort to promote Breast Cancer Awareness, Perrysburg High School will participate in the Spielman Gridiron Classic V against Bowling Green High School on Oct. 19 at Steinecker Stadium.

The theme for the evening will be “Hope Soars,” said Ray Pohlman, athletic director for Perrysburg High School. The athletic department and the athletic boosters are working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Spielman Classic to promote breast cancer awareness.

The primary goal of the Spielman classic is to promote former Ohio State graduate and NFL Detroit Lion linebacker Chris Spielman’s philosophy of “Faith, Family and Football” while raising funds for the Stefanie Spielman fund at the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. The football player's wife, Stefanie Spielman, died in 2009 from breast cancer.

The goal is to reach $100,000 for breast cancer research in Ohio during the fall football season. In addition, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes will be sending 500 students to its camps during the summer of 2013.

This is an opportunity, Perrysburg Schools said in a statement, to teach student athletes that football is more than a game and that it can be a platform to assist their communities and significantly help people who are battling a terrible disease.

The sponsors for the evening are Witzler Shank Funeral Homes, Great Lakes Medical Services, HCR –Heartland, Perrysburg Messenger Journal, Perrysburg High School athletic department and athletic boosters.

A pre-game social will be held in the north end zone of Steinecker Stadium. Also, a football, autographed by Chris Spielman, will be raffled at the game. Pink t-shirts will be on sale in the athletic office Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the week prior to the game and at the gate for $10 each. Donations will be collected during the game with all proceeds going toward breast cancer research.

Fans are asked to wear pink in support of the cause.

Chris Spielman will visit the school that raises the most money. He makes such visits to inspire students to get involved in their local community and to award a scholarship in honor of his late wife, Stefanie Spielman.

The school district encourages breast cancer survivors from the community to come to the game. They will be admitted to the game free of charge and invited to the tailgate gathering. Please contact the athletic office at 419-874-3181 ext. 5011 to be placed on the guest list.
