Melissa Colburn, a language arts teacher at Perrysburg Junior High, was honored at the Feb. 18 board of education meeting for achieving the Master Teacher distinction from the Ohio Department of Education.

According to the Ohio Educator Standards Board, a master teacher demonstrates excellence inside and outside the classroom through consistent leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning. A master teacher must also strive for distinguished teaching and continued professional growth as specified by the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.

Mrs. Colburn is the fifth Perrysburg teacher to gain the classification. She submitted a comprehensive portfolio that included evidence of her teaching abilities that was independently evaluated.

“The teachers have to meet extremely rigorous criteria to be named a Master Teacher,” explained Aura Norris, executive director of human resources and operations for Perrysburg Schools. “We are extremely proud of Melissa for achieving this honor.”
